What is a modern scooter?
They come in sizes from 50cc to 500cc and can be used for around the city or on the freeway for 1 or 2 people. They generally have 4 stroke motors, that is, they run on regular unleaded petrol. Have push button electric start. Have a fully automatic transmission. Feature underseat storage and a bag hook. New scooters range from $2800 to $14,000.
How hard are they to ride?
Scooters come in all different sizes and there is generally a scooter to suit anyone.They are easy to ride and are a lot like riding a push bike with an engine. Generally the first 4-6 weeks is the time when you master the basics of riding a scooter
Do I need a license?
In NSW you will need to get a scooter/ motorcycle license to ride any scooter. This is done by attending a two day pre-learner course done at an RTA approved centre. This is followed by a 45 question knowledge test and this grants you a learners permit. The course only costs $72 and is run everyday at various training centres across Sydney. What about storage and security on a scooter?
All scooters have underseat storage and a bag hook and some have gloves boxes. You also have the option of a top box for the back for a total of up to 100L storage. Scooters all include a steering lock and may include an engine immobilzer. Additional disc or cable locks can be added as well as data dot for extra security.
Do I get a warranty on a new scooter?
Warranty periods on scooters sold at Scooter Central range from 1-4 years inclusive of parts and labour to cover certain manufacturing faults.
What are the ongoing costs?
At Scootger Central we have two full time mechanics and can provide minor services for $165 + parts and major services for $275 + parts and services are performed a minimum of once a year. Petrol consumption starts from 2.5L per 100km. Comprehensive insurance on a scooter starts from $210 per year. We are a Swann insurance agent and can provide you with a 2 minute insurance quote. Registration costs start at $300 per year including the greenslip (CTP).
What safety apparel do I need?
Legally you are only required to wear a helmet which cost as little as $89 but we recommend that you have a jacket ($239+), wet weather gear ($60) and gloves ($70+) as a minimum. Pants ($239+) and boots ($189+) are also encouraged.
What other benefits are there to riding a scooter?
On a scooter you are legally permitted to ride in bus and transit lanes. Safe to say you should never have to pay for parking again. Overall, scooters are a practical, economical and fun way to get around Sydney.
