I have been riding scooters for over 4 years now – having entered the market in my mid 50’s and I
wish I had done it earlier.
I’m here to tell you ladies – size does matter! All joking aside, the size & weight of your scooter
should be at the top of your considerations. You should be able to comfortably move the
scooter around – especially being able to manoeuvre it into a parking space.
Also take into consideration what type of riding you’re likely to do – if you’re looking for a
commuter scooter you probably want to consider going for a 150cc scooter, just so you have the
power to handle 80-100km with comfort.
If you’re just tootling around the beaches or your local neighbourhood, then the 125 is your best
friend.
I remember when I was first looking at buying a scooter – everything looked so big, and to be
honest a little on the scary side.
When I finally purchased a scooter – I would only venture for rides around my block – at a hair
ruffling 30km/h!! ,but the more I did this, the more confident and comfortable I became and the
further (& faster) I would venture. Within a really short period of time doing this, I was opting to
take the scooter more and more for my short trips.
The biggest thing for me is the sense of fun every time I jump on the scooter. Spring is probably
my favourite season for riding, as I love being able to smell all the blossoms as I’m riding
around. I love being connected to the elements – but in saying that, I am more of a fair-weather
rider.
Let me address some of the downsides – helmets! While very necessary, they are not overly
conducive to great hair! Buns, high ponytails, and hair claws are all out the window when you
need to wear a helmet. Although for those with longer hair, taking your helmet off is a great
opportunity for the super model hair toss! Even shorter hair can benefit from a bit of fluffing
up after removing your helmet. Keep hair ties, clips/claws in your top box/under the seat, or
get yourself a Nomad from Scooter Central – these are perfect for all the necessities, (lip balm,
hair ties, keys, mini hairbrush etc.)
Other considerations are the fashion choices. I’ve had personal experience of a maxi skirt trying
to take flight while riding – suffice to say unintentional flashing, and obscured vision are not
great. If skirts/dresses are necessary for your end destination, might I suggest keeping a pair of
leggings under the seat, and/or tucking the flowing material under your bottom.
Taking all of this into consideration – the biggest overriding thing is, Scootering is FUN, and cost
effective.
I can’t recommend it highly enough, and I really wish I had ventured into this market years ago.

Happy riding – Lorraine
